At Toyota, the ultimate priority is promoting and creating a safer mobile world.
By constantly improving and changing our safety technology systems, we are effectively working toward this goal, and earning multiple IIHS Awards along the way.
Toyota has brought together four main areas of driving for an integrated approach to higher safety:
PARKING
ACTIVE SAFETY
PRE-CRASH SAFETY
PASSIVE SAFETY
PARKING
- Back-up cameras with parking guidelines
- Rear Cross-Taffic Alert – Warns of approaching vehicles while backing up
- Parking Assist – Can park a vehicle virtually unassisted
ACTIVE SAFETY
- Blind Spot Monitor – Alerts you when other vehicles are in your blind spot How does Toyota’s Blind Spot Monitor work?
- Lane Departure Alert (LDA) – Keeps you in your lane if the vehicle detects drifting. Also available with Steering Assist, to provide gentle steering inputs to help keep you in your lane How does Toyota Lane Tracing Assist work?
- Traction Control – Limits wheelspin when on slippery surfaces while travelling in a straight line See how Toyota Traction Control Works
- Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) – Helps maintain control of your vehicle on slippery surfaces by reducing engine power and applying needed brake pressure See how Toyota’s Vehicle Stability Control works
- Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) – Enhances the stability of your vehicle while braking
- Brake Assist (BA) – Detects sudden braking and adds full pressure to avoid collision
VEHICLE DYNAMICS INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT
Toyota has developed a management system that can anticipate a driver’s actions and automatically activate a variety of safety systems to ensure the highest possible level of vehicle control and stability.
PRE-CRASH SAFETY
Toyota has worked to develop technology to predict the possibility of a collision with their
- Pre-Collison System – Warns when an obstacle is detected by radar and automatically applies brakes to reduce the severity of impact, while tightening seatbelts to protects the vehicle’s occupants
Toyota Pre-Collision Safety System
PASSIVE SAFETY
- Providing the newest and safest technologies for Airbags and Seatbelts to maintain the highest safety standards for all occupants
- Impact-Absorbing body structures – Channel impact energy away from the passenger cabin
- Specially designed headrest and front seats to reduce impact effects such as whiplash
THE EVOLUTION OF TOYOTA SAFETY
STAR SAFETY SYSTEM
With its introduction in 2011, Toyota’s STAR SAFETY SYSTEM ensured all of it’s vehicles were equipped with six standard safety features:
- Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS)
- Brake Assist (BA)
- Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD)
- Vehicle Stability Control (VSC)
- Traction Control
- Smart Stop Technology – Cuts engine power when brake and accelerator are pressed together, and allows the brakes to take precedent over acceleration

TOYOTA SAFETY SENSE
At Toyota, Accident Prevention begins with Accident Protection. Now standard on virtually all new models, Toyota’s SAFETY SENSE combines three areas of accident protection:
- Preventing, or lessening the effects of frontal collisions
- Keeping drivers in their lanes
- Enhancing night time driving safety

For Compact Vehicles
3 Active Safety and Driver Assistance Systems:
- Pre-Collision Sytem – also available with Pedestrian Detection
- Lane Departure Alert (LDA)
- Automatic High Beam (AHB) – Designed to detect oncoming and preceding vehicle’s lights, and automatically switches from high to low beam

TOYOTA SAFETY SENSE – P (TSS-P)
For Mid-size to Large Vehicles
4 Active Safety and Driver Assistance Systems:
- Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
- Lane Departure Alert (LDA) – also available with Steering Assist
- Automatic High Beam (AHB)
- Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) – Automatically maintains a preset speed and distance from the vehicle directly in front to prevent collision How does Toyota’s Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) work?

- Pre-Collision System with daytime/low-light Vehicle and Pedestrian Detection + Daytime Bicycle Detection
- Lane Departure Alert (LDA)
- Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/ SA) + Road Edge Detection
- Automatic High Beam (AHB)
- Lane Trace Assist (LTA) – Keeps vehicle centred in marked lane
- Full Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC)
